VFX Gear - Tracking Markers

Cheap. Fast. Good.

Pro performance without the pro looks

As a 2D guy that does most of his own matchmoving for comp, don’t forget the lowly dot as a tracking marker. It’s cheap, performs remarkably well, and is readily available at almost every grocery, drug and office store on the planet. Anecdotal experience has taught me that SynthEyes loves these as much as anything else out there, so I wonder why so many gravitate to bigger, clunkier and lesser performing markers. Five bucks says back in the day someone at Boujou made a boatload of these things because some dev somewhere built an algorithm based on triangles, and due to the shear pain in the ass of making all this stuff on your own and the fact that they last long enough means tracking marker design is about a decade behind the latest matchmoving science.

These are my favorite.

Just make sure you use the ‘removable’ ones. Ask me how I know.

Moving forward, I’ll probably continue to print and make the big ugly ones because let’s be honest, they look pro as hell.
